Obituary of Gladys Bumstead

At Huronview Home for the Aged in Clinton, on Sunday, December 1, 2024, Gladys (Shiell) Bumstead formerly of Wingham passed away at the age of 94.

Beloved wife of the late Allan Bumstead who predeceased her on October 15, 2023. They were married and by each other’s side since October 6, 1951.

Loving mom of Jeff & Mary Bumstead of Kingston and Gary Bumstead of Wingham. Cherished grandma of Melissa (Iain Valliere) and Chris Bumstead (Courtney King).  Great grandma to Bradley.  Gladys will be lovingly remembered by her niece Heidi Moore. She is predeceased by her parents Norman & Adeline Shiell, sister Anne Moore and brother-in-law Peter Bumstead.

Gladys was known for her strong, unwavering determination and meticulous attention to detail. In her teens she loved working at Elmer Wilkinson's Wallpaper Shoppe doing bookkeeping and retail sales. She often spoke of how much she enjoyed helping customers. After her marriage she acted as bookkeeper for all of Dad's and Grampa's businesses.

A cherished wife, mom, grandmother and great grandmother known for her loving, caring, and humorous personality. Gladys always made sure those around her were taken care of - Huronview staff, friends, and family. Her grandchildren speak often of their great memories, her jokes and her radiant spirit.

In the week we spent with Mom at Huronview before her passing many residents, PSW's and Nurses shared heartwarming stories of their interactions with Mom. Hearing what a fiercely independent, spirited and feisty woman she was, right until the end of her full life, meant more to us than you could ever know. A special thank you to the incredible PSW and Nursing  caregivers that were open hearted, empathetic and kind. We can not name everyone individually, but your profound care made all the difference both, throughout her life at Huronview and during her end of life, again our gratitude is beyond words.

A heartfelt thank you to Linda VanWyk, a palliative care volunteer who went above and beyond in her caring ways and support of Mom and us during this difficult time. To the Solace Singers; Deb, Margie & Paul, knowing Mom's lifelong love of music, we know your visit was a great comfort to her and provided us with a very special memory, thank you so much. Finally thank-you to Dayna of McBurney Funeral Home for braving the snow storm.

A Celebration of both Allan and Gladys Bumstead ‘s lives will be held late spring of 2025. Details will be published when they become available.

As Gladys prioritized finding joy in life and sharing it with others, the family asks that you do the same - go out and do something that brings you real joy and share it with those around you. If you feel so moved, reach out and tell us about it - or another joyful time shared with Gladys!
