Clifford was my favourite teacher in high school in Markdale. To students he appeared gruff but was far from it. I will miss his Christmas card every year. Although I moved to Alberta we kept in touch. He was a great guy.

"I was both shocked and heart broken to hear about the loss of JC. He was my best friend and we had 100's of great adventures together in the 45 years I knew him. He was the best man at my wedding and like a second father to me. Last time we were out for supper he said he was looking forward in celebrating our 50 wedding anniversary with us... That would make him 101 years old. He made me believe that it was possible. I was the announcer at quite a few of his variety shows, attached is the paper he gave me for the famous sword fight he would do. Please accept my sincerest condolences for your loss.

It was our pleasure to know Clifford for many years. He wrote a story about us and read it our second wedding reception and it brought laughter from everyone. He was a talented writer and had a flare for drama. He was a great neighbour and local historian. Clifford will certainly be missed. Tom and Connie Black

Mr J.C. Coultes or as his students knew him Mr.C. or J.C.was one of the best and most liked teachers at Listowel high school (LDSS) . Mr C . could tell a story like no other and you could actually see what he was saying. Mr. C cared about every student . He took the time to help us with our classes and also if we had a personal problem .We all loved him.
My father also knew him well as a member and brother in the Masonic lodge in Huron county. My father Ron Shelley and J.C. would talk for hours about everything when the phone call should have only taken ten minutes. They both loved to talk !
Our family's condolences and prayers go to his family during their loss.

CLIFFORD AND I BECAME FRIENDS IN 1967,WHEN I WAS ONE OF THE ENGLISH STUDENTS HE TAUGHT WHILE AT F.D.H.S . OVER THE YEARS WE STAYED IN CONTACT AND CORRESPONDED ON OUR BIRTHDAYS AND AT CHRISTMAS TIME FAITHULLY EVERY YEAR. HIS MANY VISITS TO OUR HOME IN KINGSTON BY TRAIN WILL ALSO BE MISSED . WE ALSO SHARED A LOVE OF LITERATURE, ALTHOUGH I THINK HIS WAS SOMEWHAT GREATER THAN MINE. OUR MANY CONVERSATIONS WOULD COVER A WIDE RANGE OF TOPICS AND I ALWAYS FOUND HIS COMPANY VERY ENJOYABLE. I ESPECIALLY ENJOYED CLIFFORD`S BOOK ``ME`` WHICH GIVES THE READER A CANDID AND INSIGHTFUL LOOK INTO HIS EARLY LIFE AND THE MANY HUMOUROUS AND INTERESTING CAREER EXPERIENCES THAT HE HAD.
CLIFFORD WAS AN EDUCATOR NOT ONLY IN AN ACADEMIC SENSE, HE ALSO WAS ABLE TO SET A POSITIVE EXAMPLE TO HIS MANY STUDENTS AND OTHERS; OF A KIND AND SINCERE MAN AND ONE THAT HAS HAD A LASTING INFLUENCE ON THE LIVES OF SO MANY.
SO MUCH MORE COULD BE SAID , BUT
I`LL SIGN OFF NOW THE WAY WE HAD FOR YEARS BY SIMPLY WRITING -- YOUR FRIEND GREG

The photo posted here of Mr. Coultes is ideal. His legendary kindness, sense of humour and interest in the lives and well-being of his students shines through clearly.
When my brothers and sisters gather, talk often turns to high school experiences. Mr. Coultes and his English classes always come up as a highlight of attending Centre Grey District High School for the older ones and Grey Highlands for the younger. Mr. Coultes made Shakespeare's plays come alive with his dramatic readings as he prepared us for the much-anticipated annual bus trip to Stratford Festival.
Good teachers inspire students. Great teachers occupy a pedestal with Mr. Coultes.

So many memories of his English classes!
His love of reading and drama was one of a kind.
He was a welcomed surprise at my wedding dance and at
both of my parents funerals.
I definitely didn’t share the love he had for the stage until
last year. It took 71yrs to get the courage to perform in front of
an audience, now I’m hooked. Thanks to you Mr Coultes!

Of Mice and Men, All is Quiet on the Western Front and many more. One can produce and read the numerous stories written but no one can match the theatrical readings of a book by the one and only JC Coultes. His ability to engage an audience (classroom) by his many voice over character rolls read aloud, that if you closed your eyes you could see Huck Finn walking the river bank. I was not a star student but I have talked about my English teacher many a times to others, his ability to demonstrate the importance of literature and reading. Unfortunately, I did not hear these words until many years later but had the chance to thank him at my own father’s celebration of life. There is avoid back home I’ll bet but if you listen, I am sure you can still hear those voice tones, the crescendos hard and soft that demonstrates he is still here.
Sincere condolences to the family. Never forgotten.

We send our condolences to the family. We were fortunate to have Clifford at our place in Tavistock this past summer. He loved to come and go for a swim while having a visit.
He treated all his former students as his family members and indeed these people became his family and his relations were centered around them.
He was instrumental in making my (Dan) personal reflections in high school much more animated and meaningful than they otherwise would have been and generally giving his students a real and lasting appreciation for the art of drama.
He was responsible for staging and directing many memorable drama performances at the schools where he taught.
We had the privilege of attending theatre performances with him at the Stratford Festival, as well as attending many of his variety and social events at the schools where he taught.
Clifford, you will be missed and remembered fondly.
Rest in Peace.

Cliff was a good man and an avid Freemason who enjoyed teaching and helping others. I regret that I only knew him for the ten years that I lived in Wingham. He was very helpful when I served as Master of Wungham lodge and his ability to step up and perform almost any part of our ritual on short notice was legendary!
Cliff was a wonderfully talented raconteur and monologist - a true folksy entertainer like Harry Lauder and and Stanley Holloway. He was very generous in sharing these talents to entertain on many occasions.
Although I knew him for only a few tears, I will always have warm memories and a deep appreciation of Clifford Coultes,
Iain Henderson

It was sad indeed, to learn of Clifford's recent passing. I have many fond and special memories of Cliff, from his many years of teaching English classes, plus mounting and directing numerous plays for the drama clubs at Centre Grey District High School in Markdale and for a short while at Grey Highlands Secondary School in Flesherton.
Yes, his classes were especially memorable as he often read scenes from plays, performing all of the roles with distinctive voices, and with conviction.
As a teacher, he also quietly helped some students I know get turned around and moving forward again.
His work and dedication with the Drama Club deserves extra mention too, staging many plays, some of lighter fare and also several of the major dramatic works of G.B. Shaw.
During his years of retirement he went on to host Variety Nights at his former schools, and communities, inviting many former students (and their families) as both performers and audience for social get-togethers and complimentary refreshments too. What a generous and wonderful legacy he has left with us all.
He also made a practice of visiting those of us from the Markdale area, and often brought gifts of delicious maple syrup, maintaining those connections to so many of us, and we have all been blessed to have known him. Unforgettable, Cliff, that's what you are, and we will indeed miss you... Rest in Peace...
