In the mid 70's, Mary & Carl and Lorne and I headed out west pulling a tent trail, with all the necessary "stuff" for camping and sleeping, behind our VW diesel car. As we travelled along there was a discussion around sharing expenses especially regarding fuel. Mile after mile we went and Carl couldn't hold back any longer, "My God, how far can this car go before it needs gas?" The whole trip out cost around $75. He was astounded and said I need to get one of this (and he did). On reaching the prairie wheat fields the 2 men were examining the Black Bearded Wheat and I was able to capture the two of them showing their best sides. We spent time on the ranch of an Ontario family who had moved to Alberta!
For a number of years in the early 2000s, I was invited to travel from Ontario to Texas where Margaret and Carl spent 6 months. We drove a few hundred miles each day (never more than 300 miles). A different route each time. On this particular trip we headed for Victoria, BC to visit Doris and family; then crossed on a ferry into Washington and eventually drove the coast road to mid-California. An amazing trip of massive trees, deep gorges and hair-pin turns. Having crossed a bridge over a river gorge carved with supports. Carl pulled off to look back at the bridge, and a car with it's hood up was parked beside a family of 4 including 2 young girls, the smaller girl whispered to her mom. Later the mom shared her daughter whispered, "don't worry Mom, Santa Claus is here." Of course Carl had his full white Santa-like beard!!
After driving over the amazing Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco, we quickly found out that our next day was across 6 lanes of traffic and we were on the inside one! Using mirrors, Carl being as unstoppable as he was, with my help we made it with a huge sigh of relief!! That was probably the last trip as Margie was not doing well then and I was the co-pilot!
McClenaghan's had a sizeable lawn to mow as well as many farm chores to undertake. So I wasn't very surprised to hear they had a new white lawn mower. On a visit to their farm later, we were surprised to see a white horse tethered on their lawn. Carl not only loved his horses but like a good laugh too!
I am grateful for the times our family and Margaret and Carl had together! We had singing, dancing, horses and travel in common. Especially the travel to Texas several ties. I was only ask to pay my share of food for each trip! A very generous offer. Good friends like them aren't common.
My deepest sympathy to the entire clan! Carl is now pain-free and will be joining Margie. Much love to all!

Our family was so blessed to have been a part of Carl’s life. My wife and I so much enjoyed having our visits with him, either at our place or his and even the occasional road trip. The last one being in Goderich where we sat at the picnic table, had fish and chips and watched the waves roll in. He was always so happy, a smile a mile wide and unforgettable laughter that we will really miss. Our son even though only 3 at the time made reference to his beard being like Santa Claus…..he wasn’t far off. Carl was wise and kind and I personally learnt a lot from our discussions, they took me to a time all but forgotten and I was grateful to be with him when he relived those memories. Our family is also grateful for Jonathan and Joanne for always being there for Carl all of these years. So goodbye my friend, no more pain or lonesome thoughts, go and unite with Margie because I know you have been thinking about her every single day since the day you parted. May your next journey or road trip together be as good as the first. Love Shawn, Edina and Joey Fair

We were saddened to hear of Carl's passing, such a kind and gentle soul. His love of family, horses, friends, travel and life will always be remembered. So many wonderful memories of time spent with Marg and Carl, lots of laughs and so many stories of adventures. We often told him his life would make a great book and he would get that twinkle in his eye and laugh with that wonderful infectious laugh. We have learned a lot from Carl over the years. He was hard working, generous, patient and compassionate with a real passion for horses. He and Margie were involved when Doug and I were dating and with our subsequent marriage. We will miss our phone calls and catching up on life. It is your time to reunite with your beautiful Margie. Bye for now... Lots of love and thanks Patty, Doug, Leeann and Grace Duncan

Dear Carl, your laughter, twinkling eyes, curiosity and warmth will be forever missed.
As a fellow horse aficionado, I loved practicing drawing horses as a child visiting your home, admiring the sculptures, paintings and mementos that were so lovingly displayed. Daydreaming under the willow tree that graced your yard was a welcome pleasure while you four adults played cards in the house.
There was always a warm welcome in your home, joy in our joy, sorrow at our grief. Our family shared many happy adventures with you and Margie, and our world won’t be the same without you in it.
May all your family find comfort in knowing you live on in so many hearts, cherished memories and stories shared.

We've been very blessed to enjoy these past years on the McClenaghan farm. Carl and Margaret were truly great people and they became like a set of grandparents to us!
We have many many found memories! Having them over for meals was definitely enjoyable. The stories that came from times around the supper table were very interesting!
Carl will definitely leave a big hole... But we are so grateful to have spent these years with him!
To anyone wanting to drop by and tour the McClenaghan farm feel welcome anytime!
Our heartfelt sympathies to all of Carl's family and friends who will miss this great person!
Sincerely Jonathan Joanne & Joel

Our sympathies to all the McClenaghan family on Carl's passing. I have many great memories of visits to the farm as a child. He was lucky to be able to stay on the farm and have the Gerber's look out for him these past few years.

To all Carl's family, please accept our heart felt condolences. In 1975 we first met Carl and Marg after we purchased a home that was on their cow calf farm. They were driving the old Pontiac (think it was) out in the field checking the livestock and following a chat across the fence, a 46 year friendship began. They were the best of people you could find. So many good times in their farm house and so many fantastic meals and pies. The stories and loved memories are too many to list but Carl remained as a member of our family as often as possible. We were always very grateful that Carl had Jonathan and Joanne only a door away, two people he loved very much. We will miss you Carl. God Bless.
Sandy and Sue
